Montgomery County Programs

Change a child's life for the better, forever.

Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center Mentoring Program

The VTCRC Mentoring program is a brand-new program modeled after the Big Brothers Big Sisters Beyond School Walls program, and it is designed to be a partnership between Big Brothers Big Sisters, Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, and Montgomery County Public Schools. The purpose of this program is to promote STEM education through mentoring. Children in the program will be matched for a minimum of one school year in one-to-one mentoring relationships with employees working in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field at the VTCRC. During the school year, Bigs and Littles will create and foster their relationship, and Big Brothers Big Sisters will track the outcomes and impact made. The vision for the program is for middle school aged children to come to the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center one day per week from 3:30pm-5pm. During that time, the students will spend one hour with their Big either at BBBS’ facility or the Big’s workplace. Workplace mentoring programs are impactful because they give children access to a professional environment. The Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center is a unique facility in the children will be exposed to a variety of industries in the professional and academic spheres.

Bigs in Blue

The Bigs in Blue program is built on the belief that trust and understanding in a community are developed on relationship at a time. A police officer who volunteers to be part of Bigs in Blue will be matched with a child facing adversity in the community. Many children see law enforcement officers solely as authority figures, not as regular people. Bigs in Blue will not only enable youth to bond with caring, supportive officers, but will also enable officers to get to know the community they serve.

All officers in the police departments, fire departments, sheriff’s offices, and emergency response agencies in Southwest Virginia are invited to make a difference in a child’s life by becoming a Big. Bigs in Blue volunteers in Blacksburg can participate in the VTCRC Mentoring Program or the Pulaski School Based Mentoring Program.
